    New Beethoven sonata

Heard this, this morning on BBC Radio 3.

    Not again!
If people want unfamiliar Beethoven piano music there are literally dozens of works (such as the variations) which are hardly ever played.
I think the motive behind all these "reconstructions" must be the publicity value. A new recording of, say, Beethoven's Salieri variations would never make headlines.
Maybe I'm just cynical. My back is acting up (and these sort of things get my back up anyway.)

For me it's not a question of wanting unfamiliar LvB piano music (or any other genre), it's simply a chance to hear "what could have been", and to save me flight tickets to distant archives to inspect dusty manuscripts (or microfiche).
Come on Michael, what if we suddenly discovered a first draft of some famous Beatle song (preferably by Lennon or Harrison) that bears only passing resemblance to the final released version. Wouldn't you be at least moderately interested to see/hear what their first thoughts were? Just out of curiosity?

Sometimes though it can be a let down as in this case!

Yes, OK, like Baz Cooper's "10th", but at least my curiosity has been satisfied and I can move on.

I mean, when I first read that there were sketches of a so-called "10th" I was desperate to have a look, to get an idea. Surely you were all the same, no?

Yes and again what a let down, but I was younger then and a bit more naive.

Many versions of Beatle songs in their early stages are popping up all over YouTube and I've downloaded my share of them.

When it comes to Beethoven, of course I am fascinated by his first thoughts. That is why I have downloaded practically all the original sketches from "The Unheard Beethoven".

What I object to is some guy (or gal) stitching them together and calling it a composition.

I'm with you on that (not downloading the Beatles bit of course! )

You should let your hair down now and again, Peter. I can't - I've none left!
