        Today:

        Dvorak:
Symphony no.9 op.95 “From the New World”
From the latest BBC MM CD.
A lovely rendition of this work, including the repeat of the 1st mvt.
        Well balanced, rather lyrical interpretation.
Though I like my Dvorak 9 more dramatic –especially in the finale- this is a fine performance, but certainly.not a very memorable one IMO.
But which BBC Music magazine subscriber is waiting for this?

        Gipps:
        Symphony no.2 op.30 (1945)

The violin concerto, with Zino Francescatti and the Columbia SO under Bruno Walter. I like Francescatti's slightly astringent tone in this work which can easily sound bland (especially the first movement).

I know Ockeghem's famous for having written music to many, many voices, twenty voices not being uncommon. I have heard a couple of compositions by Desprez but do not quite enjoy them. Not so much as this little piece. For me Medieval is synonimous with that sound babies do instead of speech (don't know the word) ). In particular, in the field of music. And we lack the sensitivity. But this can be developed. For certain the Prolationum does not seem a mere mathematical puzzle like so many medieval music. It appeals to the mind but speaks to the heart too, or it does in my case. (This is music to be heard at low volume levels.)
