Another tragedy -- Isaac Stern gone...

The venerable violinist passed away today. Just learned. Here is the full story --

I'm really bummed. I feel an entire epoch is coming to a close. The Old Guard is dwindling.

Interesting article, but why does the reviewer say 'the fury of Beethoven'? Not much fury in the Violin concerto that I'm aware of!

Well said... the old gard is now leaving us.
It is a terrible loss for music.

With regard to Beethoven, I certainly won't miss the old guard.

The remark seems to refer to Beethoven generally as far as I can deduce, not specifically the Violin concerto. On the other hand you should try Bruggens recording on Phillips!!

We have lost one of the best violist of our times. He was a really good man. If you have seen music of the heart you will know what I mean. Here is a funny story that my dad had told me. Years ago when he was at IU in Bloomington IND. He took my mom to see a string quartet. I don't remember who was all in it. I do know that Isaac Stern was playing the first violin part. As the concert was going on my dad noticed something was wrong he did not what was wrong because he was sitting way in the back of the concert hall. Well anyways he was playing the whole entire piece in second and third position on his violin bceause he had broke the e string on his violin. Instead of stopping in the middle of it. He finshed that movement of the piece and during intermission he went to change strings. My dad had told me this story many of times.
