    The Pulse of an Irishman

St. Patrick's Day is almost here and it's mentioned in this Beethoven arrangement:

I may have mentioned a few hundred times that my home town appears in two Beethoven folksong settings. Beat that!

I'll go through the Welsh songs whether there is anything suitable to celebrate the Grand Slam (hopefully )

Very good! Happy St. Patrick's day to all, and all the more if you are celebrating with some of Beethoven's Irish folksong arrangements!

I'll be celebrating later, at an Irish Ceili Night, down the social.

        Happy Feast day!

Well done, Wales! Our match isn't over yet, but it's not looking good. Unless something drastic happens, I'll have to pick WoO 153. No. 6 as our theme song: "Sad and luckless was the season".

Looking at the final score, I'd have to settle for a Scottish song (although included with the Irish): "The Massacre of Glencoe".

The corned beef and cabbage I had for dinner last night was especially good. Beethoven, corned beef...if I only I could figure out a wine that went well with that meal, it would have been the perfect feast day.

A Rioja or a Barros would have done that job

I'll have to try one of those next time, Roehre.

Speaking of Irish music, does anyone have any idea what the tune is that is used in this video? You can hear it, for example, at about 3:08.

The song is called "The Real Old Mountain Dew" and it's performed by the Clancy Brothers - a world-famous Irish folk group who hail from my wife's home town of Carrick-on-Suir.
Their lead singer, Liam Clancy, who died a couple of years ago, has been described as the "best ballad singer in the world" by no less a person than Bob Dylan.
The song (once you get past the diddley-eye dums) is about the making of "poteen" (or moonshine) and the opening of it runs like this:

"Let grasses grow and waters flow in a free and easy way
But give me enough of the rare oul' stuff that's brewed near Galway Bay
And policemen all, from Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim too
We'll give them the slip and we'll take a sip of the real oul' mountain dew".

Strangely, it's not included in Beethoven's folksong arrangements.

                        Here it is:

Thanks, Michael! It's a catchy tune, and I could have sworn I'd heard it before, but trying to google the only lyrics present in the clip used in the video was...problematic

Though I didn't hit on the right song, The Clancy Brothers did come up in my research last night, and I listened to some of their music. Good stuff!
