Hm...I wonder if Beethoven would be insulted by someone saying his rhythms were predictable?

I'm always sceptical of things like this and certainly don't agree that Beethoven's rhythm is predictable unless you know what's coming!

Exactly.
I e.g. don't think the public at the premiere of the Eroica were exactly antecipating the against-the-beat-chords in the first mvt.
