    The Beethoven teaser

Here then are the next lot of teasers for you - answers on Friday, so plenty of time! Questions that have been correctly answered will he highlighted in red.

    1) A little gem for this principalled lady.

    2) A sketchy philosopher by name. Answered by Michael: WITTGENSTEIN SKETCHBOOK

    3) A small commission, thankfully salvaged.

    4) More chips? Sounds a bit patronising to me! Answered by Michael: MORITZ FRIES

    5) The lark ascends over this mystery place. Answered by Michael (sort of!): KARLSBAD (and the Immortal beloved mystery)

    6) Vote for these three? Answered by Michael : ELECTORAL SONATAS WoO 47

    7) Are these dancers rock bound? Answered by Michael: CREATURES OF PROMETHEUS

    8) A Viola for a friend? Answered by Philip: FRANZ OLIVA

Better make it Sunday week by the looks of it - I'm going to a Halloween party on Saturday night.

(Groan). At first glance, the only two I can have a stab at are 8: Ries? And 4 must be Count Fries?

Oh, and 7 must have some connection with Prometheus who was bound to a rock?

6 must be three Electors of Cologne but I can only remember the name of Max Franz. (I haven't the strength to Google the rest of them and it could still be wrong.)

    I'm done for now.

Off to a good start Michael with numbers 4 and 7. Enjoy your party!

Count Moritz Fries is the patron and Prometheus was of course bound to a rock.
I'll highlight questions in red on the original post that have been correctly answered to save constant re-reading of posts.

Well perhaps this lot are too hard? I hope not but I can't make them so obvious that anyone here can get them straight away! An extension till next Friday's instalment is granted before answers are given.

I think the answer to no.8 maybe referring to the humerous piece Beethoven wrote for his friend, and cello player, Baron Nikolaus Zmeskall
(“mit zwei obligaten Augengläsern”, woo 32), a duo for viola and cello in E flat major by Beethoven.

Is no.5. Anything to do with Haydn 'The Lark' String Quartet in D major. no. 5 ?

Good attempts Megan, but I'm afraid not the answers I'm looking for! Some of the clues are anagrams and some are cryptic - I understand the difficulty here because I'm hopeless at cryptic crosswords, but at least we know here all clues are directly related to Beethoven in some way.

No. 6 must be the three Electoral sonatas, WoO47?

No. 2 .... Goethe? He did a bit of sketching.

A slight clue for no.1 (which is perhaps the hardest one there) is the deliberate misspelling of 'Principalled'.
