    Musical Teasers

Again inspired by Philip's brilliant cryptic message (though not intended as such!) I thought it would be fun to have a regular test of our musical knowledge, based mainly as is fitting on Beethoven.

To kick off - name these Beethoven works:

    1) A stony path through the forest leads to the original walk.
    2) A Spooky number?
    3) The first Amendment?
    4) A Mendelssohnian trip?

Name these people connected with Beethoven:

    1) Liam Neeson plays Liszt?
    2) A Fair weather prodigy.
    3) Praise to fatness!
    4) A very tidy man.

    Hm...tricky.

For the people connected with Beethoven, I think 3) is Ignaz Schuppanzigh.

Well done Chris - 'Lob auf den Dicken' (Praise to fatness) WoO100 written as a humorous unaccompanied choral piece with the catchy line 'Schuppanzigh ist ein lump'!!

I think I have a few of them but it would be better to keep the quiz open, if possible, in case others would like to work them out. So I won't spell them out:

The Liam Neeson answer lies in a famous film title.
"A spooky number" suggests Opus 70 No. 1
The Mendelssohnian clue could be Opus 112.
"First Amendment" is tricky - could it be Opus 72?
"Path through the woods" - all I can think of is Opus 68.

        Can't figure out the others.

First three I've marked in red are correct Michael - I didn't want to make it too easy as I know we have some very knowledgeable people here!

The Liam Neeson Liszt is Schindler
Spooky number is the Ghost trio
Mendlessohn also wrote a piece 'Meerestille und gluckliche fahrt' - Calm sea and prosperous voyage.

            Mmmm.
            "First Amendment" - Opus 84?

The stony walk or whatever is driving me bonkers.

Afraid not Michael - actually I've made a slight mistake in the first clue, it should be "A stony path through the forest leads to the original walk."

No, I made the mistake about the path. Your original clue hasn't changed. Still can't get it though.

"First Amendment" - one more try - Opus 125?

I replaced wood with forest Michael in the clue. No I'm afraid Op.125 isn't right - full answers tomorrow to see if anyone can get them - I'm quite pleased I've foxed you all, though you've done well to get some - the others are a bit more obscure I admit.

Is it B's Pastoral symphony no. 6.?

Mälzel? Perhaps tidiness refers to the "clean-ness" of tempo when using a metronome?

No that would be far too vague.

Brilliant! It has to be that!
