As few as possible! In his younger years they were mainly wealthy aristocratic young ladies such as Josephine and Therese Brunsvik. Only a few of these such as Baroness Ertmann and Princess Odelscalchi were really able pianists. Carl Czerny is probably the most famous of B's pupils - known to pianists through his sets of studies which did not meet with Beethoven's approval. Czerny numbered Liszt amongst his own pupils. Only two others did Beethoven formerly acknowledge as pupils - Ferdinand Ries (Beethoven had studied Violin with Ries's Father Franz in Bonn) and Archduke Rudolph who was an extremely able pianist and the dedicatee of many important works such as the 'Archduke' trio and the Emperor Concerto.

If we believe SCHINDLER, CZERNY, in 5 years, only got about 50 lessons with B. (of course one lesson with a great Master is better than hundreds with a "normal" teacher). And RIES a lot of less. CZERNY played B.s works with the singing line one octave higher (he liked it so and his own compositions are also in this way...) and RIES was changing B. notes when playing.
But in B. s correspondance there is no sign of big problems with CZERNY or RIES............
