I do admire Roehre who quietly continues his postings of his listening experiences whilst aesthetic (and political/religious) arguments rage on either side of this thread. Roehre is a rock in this maelstrom of self-interested opinion-pedalling.
I regret to post what I have missed today here in Strasbourg at the outset of the Musica Contemporary Music festival : Les Percussions de Strasbourg, a documentary film followed by a performance of Gérard Grisey : Le Noir de l'Etoile.
I'll be making postings later about concerts I will have attended.

Whenever I hear the words te deum I immediately think of Bruckner. Here's why:

The performance speaks for itself but the split between parts is unforgivable.

The best thing I can recommend here Preston is the documentary 'Shadows and light' directed by Larry Weinstein - it is an intimate portrait of Rodrigo featuring interviews with him and his wife as well as plenty of his music that isn't as well known as the guitar concerto.

Listening to two versions of the 1st movement of Bruckner's 3rd Symphony (original with Tintner and the Jochum version--not sure which off the top of my head). It's interesting how strange the second/third version sounds after listening to the 1st.

Thank you Peter. Sounds interesting. Will hopefully look into it. I have been listening to his, "Fantasía para un gentilhombre".

Listening to Mozart's opera overtures to Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute. I have misunderstood Mozart for a large part, I think. I felt that his music was lacking realism and depth - though, in truth, I now believe it was I who lacking realism and depth. I love Mozart. What I felt when I just listened to those overtures was different than anything I have felt before when listening to them - depth and realism, etc.

Mozart seems to be such a peaceful person? It is a such a shame, such a great shame - really unimaginable - that Beethoven was hit up with so many conflicts, problems, frustrations, etc. throughout his entire life! One would think he knew nothing but suffering (and I imagine Beethoven knew of suffering to a great level) but he really had some "light" and "hope", etc. ("" - light and hope, if you will?) in him. Beethoven's suffering in life horrifies me to the point where I do not even want to imagine it for a second, in a sense. Always having physical health issues, mentally frustrated, deaf, etc.! My gosh! AH!

Great minds think alike !! Actually, I'm preparing a mini presentation for my advanced harmony (would-be teachers) group this Friday: just the exposition, pointing out the harmonies and that great "Star Wars" 2+3 Bruckner rhythm. I regret to say none of these students has ever heard a note of Bruckner. Will I make any converts this Friday? I'll keep you posted, Sorrano !
