Pauline Garcia-Viardot (1821-1910) must surely be one of the most incredibly gifted women ever. Not only was she the one of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of the 19th century, she could equally well have had a career as a piano virtuoso as she was an outstanding pianist, admired by Chopin, Moschelles and Clara Schumann. Her compostions (which include operas) impressed Liszt enough for him to declare "with Pauline Viardot, the world had finally found a woman composer of genius". She also spoke fluent Spanish, French, Italian, English, German and Russian. As well as these achievements she was also known for her very kind nature and joie de vivre - a most remarkable women.
