    Today:

    Suchon:
Nocturne for cello and orchestra (1927) (R3: TtN)
(AFAIK at least the fourth time this piece was broadcast in TtN the last two years, and again in the same rather badly recorded performance. Does no-one listen to the quality of the recordings to be broadcast?)

    Hartmann:
    String quartet no.2 (1945/’46)
    Symphony no.4 (for strings, 1947)

Geirr Tveitt - Concerto No. 2 for Hardanger fiddle.

Interesting piece, I'll have to listen to more of this Norwegian composer.

            Today:

            Suchon:
            Sinfonietta (1927) (R3: TtN)

            JSBach:
Organ works from the latest BBC MM CD, including
Toccata, Adagio & fugue BWV 564 (one of my favourites),
            the Vivaldi-concerto BWV 593,
Preludes and Fugues BWV 544 and 541,
            Passacaglia BWV 582
            and a couple of chorale-preludes.
Beautiful Silbermann organ, interesting registrations, well recorded, though some of the pieces, e.g. the Toccata BWV 564, are IMO inadequately phrased (it is played rushedly anyway), leaving me out of breath.

Beethoven's final piano sonata, no. 32, made for a very pleasant drive to work today (for a change!).

Do you mean you don't usually have a pleasant drive into work?

Washington D.C. traffic makes my drive into nightmare. Beethoven is my only hope for starting the day off right!

After listening to the excerpts to Beethoven's Missa Solemnis (linked in another thread) I am listening to Bruckner's Ave Maria. Philip, do you listen to much of the vocal music of Bruckner? These must be fascinating for harmonic study.

This morning I broke out (figuratively speaking) the Norton CD's that cover the "Ancient to Baroque" periods of music and am listening to the first. Currently playing is the Mass for Christmas Day. These are good sets to have for good examples of early music--a starter kit, if you will.
