    Méhul

    Some interesting news here for your perusal. Please click on the link after. I think this one may please Hofrat somewhat!

    PS : The David Charlton mentioned in the article was my orchestration tutor. So, what's wrong with a bit of name dropping? As to the so-called "missing link" in classical music, that is your usual journalistic hyperbole!

    Very interesting Philip and slightly misleading article title as the commentators below point out that the complete Mehul symphonies are already available on cd - he is certainly a composer I need to explore as he did have an influence on Beethoven's Heroic style.

      I think it may particularly please Chaszz, . Chaszz posted about a distinction between Mehul and Beethoven not long ago.

        Since this symphony has been recorded in 1989 by Nimbus Records (NI 5184/5), I believe that we are talking about the 1st peformance of Mehul's 4th symphony in 200 years. I have the above-mentioned CD set and a CD of nearly all of his opera overtures. They are very fine listening and I highly recommend them. It will be hard to find the overture CD because the recording company, ASV, has been bought out and shut down.

          I have only Minkowski's CD of the 1st and 2nd Symphonies, a CD I like A LOT. I once talked with Minkowski and asked him to complete the cycle, he said he had that intention, but left it at that. His recording is, to my ears, quite better than the Gulbekian's (I don't know the conductor).
          I don't have much of Mehul, but what I have I consider top notch.

            For the Nimbus recordings of Mehul's complete symphonies, the conductor of the Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation is Michel Swierczewski (Wow! A last name 12 letters long).

              Skrowaczewski wins by a nose! (superb Bruckner by the man)

                  Well you know, "é" or "e" (not to mention "è") is to the ear rather like c# or c-natural.

                      I have trouble putting accents on vowels. I apologize if I unwittingly hurt someone's feelings because of this.

                          We on this forum have learned to take Philip with a pinch of salt.
                          Perahps a spoonful of sugar would be better, without the molasses extracted!

                            My dear Megan, you may well take me with a pinch of salt or a spoonful of sugar, but this does not excuse :
                            a) American spelling, e.g. "learned" instead of "learnt" (I prefer the Queen to any President, and irregular verbs need to be treated irregularly);
                            b) "Perahps" instead of "Parumph" ...;
                            c) Etc.
                            Please leave my molasses intact.
