I have found a piece of music that I have been thoroughly enjoying listening to: Henry Purcell's Queen's Dolour, A Farewell in A Minor, Z. 670. It is by Purcell, and it is most touching and kind of sad. Is anybody familiar with this piece?
JSBach:
Cantata Wachet aus ruft uns die Stimme BWV 140 (for Trinity 27, the last Sunday before Advent)
Cantatas BWV 61 and 62, both “Nun kommt der Heiden Heiland “, for Advent 1 (today)
Weirdly enough there aren’t any Bach cantatas for Advent 2 and 3.
Beethoven: Grosse Fuge (Ardittis – thanks Bryn)
Stravinsky: Pulcinella-suite
Piano concerto
Ebony concerto
Tippett: Suite in D (1948)
Vieru: Symphony no.3 “La un eutremur” (Earthquake) (1977)
This morning it was Beethoven's first piano concerto, HIP performance with Newman and the London Philomusica Antiqua Orchestra with Braithwaite conducting. The last movement was performed at a breakneck speed and I'm not entirely sold on the sound of the piano. The upper registers are a bit thin and being used to the modern piano it was a little odd to me.
JSBach: Cantatas BWV 192, 193 and 194 (not related to today, but as Bach either hasn’t composed any for Advent 2, or these have gone lost, some not-church-calendar -related sacred cantatas)
Webern: 3 little pieces for ‘cello and piano opus 11 (1914)
Hindemith: Solo-cello sonata op.25/3 (1923)
Zimmermann: Solo-cello sonata (1960)
Smalley; Piano concerto (1985)
Harman: Iridescence (1990)
Britten: Saint Nicholas op.42
(It’s St.Nicolas’ Eve today)
