Piano Concerto #6 in D Major, Opus 61 (Violin Concerto)

Today I heard on the radio a lovely recording of a transcription Beethoven made from his violin concerto to convert it into a piano concerto, with four cadenzas that Beethoven wrote for the piece. The one I heard was with Francois-Rene Duchable (piano), Sir Yehudi Menuhin (conductor)

Yes well I think the best things that came out of Beethoven's transcription (which he only did to make the work more saleable in London) are the cadenzas - wonderfully original and I think they are the best to use with the actual Violin concerto, far preferable to Joachim's.

Speaking of re-adapting the piano cadenza to the violin concerto, Patricia Kopatchinskaja and Phillip Herreweghe did a great version. Because the piano cadenza has two distinct voices at times, she actually overdubs the other hand part on this record. Live, the concertmaster plays the second hand part. Pretty fascinating. Also love the timpani part!
