Yesterday I was back in 1910 listening to a reconstruction of the last night of the proms from that year. Back in 2010 I'm listening to Mozart's last string quintets.

              Listening now to the sublime!

Rather a curious "deviation" for me : Frank Loesser : "I've Never Been in Love Before". A 1950s "hit", I believe. The "function" of my listening to this work is purely pedagogic, as its harmonies are interesting for teaching purposes (flattened 6ths, suspensions, added 9ths, chromaticism ...). Actually, rather well constructed, if I l may say so.

I shall soon be attending the annual Strasbourg "Musica" contemporary music festival (late September-early October), with a healthy dose of Xenakis on the programme. All is well in the world, therefore.

Xenakis, eh - What pieces? Will they be playing any of his electro-acoustic works?

What would an unhealthy dose be like?

I think my medication of Monteverdi vespers at the proms was probably more effective - there again, we have different ailments!!

If you want a really wonderful song for analysis here's one from Tin Pan Alley. It's called "Satan, Get Thee Behind Me" from the 1936 Irving Berlin score for "Follow the Fleet". I've always loved it. Amazing melody and all in the minor key. Note the piano introduction and the ending.
