Some time ago I sought out a good interpreter of the Beethoven sonatas (a good cycle) and had certain recommendations. This morning I awakened to the 2nd movement of the op. 10, no. 3 being played in a manner that felt right to me. It was not rushed, not too fast, not too slow, but was just right. I have the later Kempff cycle and simply do not like it--several sonatas feel as if they were rushed through (perhaps to get to the "more interesting" ones), and in particular did not like his version of the op. 10, no. 3. However this one I heard this morning was played by Bernard Roberts and I do see why he was recommended in the earlier thread. I listened to the subsequent two movements, as well, and really liked what I heard.

                    Today: RAVEL

"Le Tombeau de Couperin" played by Louis Lortie. (I have another version of this work by Jean-Yves Thibaudet which isn't anywhere near as good as Lortie's performance.) This tumultuous, tender, rapturous, ethereal, poignant work is to-die-for!!

This magnificent composer constantly yields delights! Last week it was "Daphnis and Chloe" orchestral suite - Ye Gods, what music!! What an orchestrator!!

Heard a very energetic recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 on the radio on the way to work today. I had forgotten how much I like this one!

Are these from one of his cycles? If so, which one? I've heard that the first cycle he did was pretty good. The one I have is the second, but the last disc contains the same program as the penultimate, so I missing the last sonatas in the cycle. Bummer.
