Charles Mackerras has died overnight. This wonderful Australian conductor made a massive contribution to art music. He was a polymath and a great champion of the music of Leos Janacek. Vale Sir Charles; you will be missed.

I love his recordings and I have many of them. My favorites are the Complete Mozart Symphonies, and the Schubert Symphonies. I especially love the fact that he divided the violins; 1st violins to the left of the conductor, and 2nd violins to the right. I feel it makes a huge difference.
