Great music, isn't it? I love especially the swing arrangements, which btw were intended: most of these songs were written in the "swing" era .
But even "bebopped" I like them.

      =========================

For me something different, continuing exploring Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921):

      Amy Beach
String Quartet in One Movement, Op.89 (1929)
Hermit Thrush At Eve, Op.92/1 (1922) (R3: CotW)

      Diepenbrock:
      Songs on German Texts

      3 Ballades opus 1
      Celebrität
      Der Abend
      Der Abend kommt gezogen
      Der Fischer
      Der König in Thule
      Die Liebende schreibt
      Entsagung
      Es war ein alter König
      Hinüber wall'ich
Kann ich im Busen heisse Wünsche tragen?
      Liebesklage
      Lied der Spinnerin
      Mignon

      Diepenbrock:
      Hymne aan Rembrandt (1906)

This afternoon, and to fit my mood:

Rameau, "Pygmalion" - (Acte de Ballet) - La Petite Bande/Leonhardt

The beautiful, opening, aria sung by the despairing Pygmalion, carries these beautiful words - set to the most plaintive music:

        "Fatal Amour, cruel vainqueur,

This morning, and to suit my mood:

Ravel: "Sheherazade" Regine Crespin/L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
              Ansermet

This most beautiful voice is perfect for the poetry of the most lovely piece in this set, "Asia":

              "Asie, Asie, Asie,
vieux pays merveilleux des contes de nourrice,
              ou dort la fantaisie
              comme une imperatrice
en sa foret tout emplie de mystere"

This classic recording must be the best performance ever of this work!

(I must stop these translations as I don't have the acute, etc.)

Tonight I've watched a performance by the Royal Ballet of "Ondine", with a terrific score by Hans Werner Henze. I little know this composer's work, but it was just perfect for this great ballet. Glorious dancing and production values.

IMO this is really the one performance/recording of Sheherazade.

                      This morning:

Elgar: "Sea Pictures" - Janet Baker/LSO/Barbirolli

What a voice!! What a recording!! What music!!

Poulenc: Seven songs, Regine Crespin/John Wustman, piano
(on the same CD as the aforesaid Ravel pieces)

A perfect contrast to the Elgar songs, and both to suit my mood!!

Listening to the amazingly talented, and very well trained- particularly when concerning Bach, stuck-up girl (IMO) Hilary Hahn, graciously playing a lot of solo violin music, by Bach. Such as, the partitas, sonatas, chaconnes, etc.

                              I quite like Bach's music.
