Niels W. Gade

Yesterday I heard for the first time an awesome overture, from the Danish Composer Niels Gade. I was looking for this for some time since I heard that Mendelssohn and Schumann loved this overture and his 1st symphony very much, actually they were even friends of Gade in Leipzig.

Gade was not at first recognized as a serious composer in his home country of Denmark, and it was only after Mendelssohn championed his works that he became more well-known in the 19th century.

I don't know if you saw it Gerd, but I mentioned in the 'what are you listening to' thread that I was listening to Gade's 1st and 5th symphonies. The 5th symphony is delightful and unusual in that it has a piano obbligato part - I think you'd enjoy this piece.

Gerd, Peter mentioned two of Gade's symphonies, and I think you will like the nos. 2-4 and 6-8 as well.

If you like the Gade symphonies, I think you should give his compatriot Frohlich's symphony in E-flat (1833) a hearing too.
