I was puzzled by his reference to the third act of Fidelio, however, considering it is only in two acts. A mistake, or might they have been preparing an earlier version that was in three acts?

There are only 2 acts in "Fidelio" as opposed to the 3 acts in "Leonore." The 2nd act of "Fidelio" splits into 2 large scenes: the dungeon scene and the court scene. I believe that when he meant was the 2nd scene of the 2nd act.

Not being a German speaker or reader, it would be nice if someone would give an English summary of what it is all about.
