Written in July/Aug 1806 One of the most remarkable things about this quartet is the unity of thematic material between the movements. It was also the first of Beethoven's quartets to begin with a slow introduction. The reflective slow movement has a gentle rocking rhythm that is accompanied by pizzicato notes in the 'cello.
The Graceful minuet leads straight into the finale - one of the most exhilerating fugues Beethoven wrote.
