    Which popular piece of music, [I think from 1983] included the slow movement from Beethoven's Pathetique ?

    There was a version out in the sixties by Ken Dodd (the comedian and singer) called "More than Love" - and that was the very first time I heard the melody.
    Neil Sedaka brought out a version called "Steel Blue Eyes" but I am sure there have been quite a few more.

      It was "This Night" off the An Innocent Man album by Billy Joel.
