    Beethoven in China.

Our daughter was in a Chinese cafe recently, yes a cafe, in England, when her twin daughters drew her attention to the Chinese sounding music being played in the background.

Listening a little more attentively she heard Beethoven's fifth and then a Mozart piece. The music was being played on what sounded like traditional chinese instruments.

With the fame of Concert pianist Lang Lang spreading across the world are we to see a huge upsurge in sales of Western Classical music in China?

The two Beethoven memorials already there are a fine start.

Poor Maurice, nobody seems to have replied to your thread. Let me see if I can't get the ball rolling for you. Expect a few visits from now on. Add icon thing, the smiling one.

I was watching Lang Lang recently in a documentary in which Daniel Barenboim gave a masterclass on the Beethoven sonatas and it was quite an experience to see Lang (if I may be so bold as to use his first name) meekly listening to and taking instruction from the older master.
Lang is also to the fore on the popular front as he plays on Mike Oldfield's latest album "Music of the Spheres".

That could prompt a spherical reply that would be deleted by the moderators.

As I said before, always a bad idea to quote oneself. But I did tell you to expect a few visits. Please add it to your ever-expanding slate, Maurice.

PDG, you are very perceptive : Yes, early Greek philosopher meets Alex Higgins (is that the right name?) !! I always said you were a Platonist at heart.

No, I'm a Plutonist (a la Disney). And there's both a demoted planet and yet another animal to add to our Noah's Ark of Forum Fun!..

Your penchant for alliteration shows me you read Private Eye or else are a fan of James Ellroy. I think we should be told.

I read The Beano, Phil. Beethoven may have read it, too (although this is unlikely...).

No, you're right, he did read the Beano, only then it was called the Viennese Musical Times (I can't be bothered to write the original German).

Thanks for the confirmation. Yes, my favourite strip was Ludwig's Earwigs about a cocky German boy who had a collection of earwigs. And at night they would get out of bed and secretly make drum kits (by Ludwig).

(I think I must be going insane...). NURSE!! The Screens!!......
