Beethoven and some mp3s

I am what you could call an internet wanderer, but I mainly look for good quality mp3s. I was rewarded when I came across this treasure trove:

Here I found Beethoven's symphonies nos. 4 & 8, also his romances for violin and orchestra. They are great performances - the Musikkollegium Winterthur directed by conductors Heinrich Schiff, Franz Welser-Most and Janos Furst. There are many other pieces by other composers too...

I'll continue searching.

After having another wander, I found an excellent track. Performed by Simone Dinnerstein, a rising American pianist, and Zuill Bailey - a movement from Beethoven's Cello Sonata No.3 in A. Also on the same page can be found the aria from Bach's Goldberg Variations.

You've reminded me of a question I keep meaning to ask: Did Bach himself compose the actual aria from the Goldberg variations or is it the work of another composer (as in the Diabellis) ?

Arnold Schering suggested that Bach did not write it. The recent opinion of scholars these days seems to be that Bach did write it.

Right. Since I posted the last message I have been watching "Hannibal Rising" and, lo and behold, the very aria came into it. Of course it is Hannibal Lecter's signature tune.

I've found other parts of that same Dinnerstein recording of the Goldberg Variations. Well, another recording of the aria but also the variation 14.

These are complete recordings of Beethoven's symphonies, Europa Philharmonia Orchestra, but in wma format - which I found a pest.
I used an audio converter I found to change them to mp3. All the same, I could swear they were originally midi.

There's sure to be better symphony versions to be found.

On nearly every page of this site can be found excellent free downloads performed by the Concilium Musicum Wien and mostly conducted by Paul Angerer. The composers vary from as obscure as Johann Adolph Hasse to the slightly more familiar Michael Haydn. Please, enjoy at my expense.
