    That's interesting Fanny del Rio. In the BBC programme "Eroica" someone called Beethoven "Louis" and I thought that can't be correct but seems it is

      Yes welcome Phil. French was the language of polite society in Austria and Russia at that time - ironic since Napoleon was bombarding the hell out of them!

        Welcome, Phil. I read recently that Beethoven was known to his friends as "Louis" (without the S sound). In "Copying Beethoven" he is called this in several scenes.

          I believe it was that way in "Immortal Beloved" also if memory serves me correctly.
