Tchaichovsky's fifth. Amazing! Especially in the last mouvement, it reminds me of B's fourth concert, an explosion of fireworks. Strange enough Tch. didn't like him!
The theme of the slow movement of Tschaikovsky's 5th symphony was taken from the slow movement of Raff's 10th symphony. Tschaikovsky used it as the main theme and consequently did more with it than Raff who used it as the third theme of a slow rondo.
"Is it not strange that sheep guts should hale souls out of men's bodies?"
Chopin complete nocturnes and impromptus played by Claudio Arrau. Superb and somehow more muscular and honest than the equally superb but more refined and mercurial versions by Rubinstein and Horowitz. On the whole I think I prefer his richer more mellow tone too - but what do others think? Amazing how involving and enlightening and deeply personal these older performances are - wonder how many of today's super-technicians we'll be able to say that about!
BTW also just watched another in the new BBC series on Sacred music - this one on Palestrina with Harry Christophers and the Sixteen performing - absolutely heavenly. On BBC4. If you can get it don't miss it.

Yes I saw this as well - there is more on Sunday (but repeats). I thought the Josquin des prez was a rather impressive piece, but I can't remember the title!
Hello. First post here. What a pleasant forum you have!
I am listening to something called Symphony on a French Mountain Aire. I don't know who it's by, but the person who gave it to me kept insisting it's a dandy piece.

I think he always claimed his birthday was March 31st - He was probably correct as it was the custom to baptise the following day and this did take place on April 1st. At any event he's not doing badly for 276!
Listening to Mozart's Concertante for Violin and Viola.
Beethoven quartet Op.95
