A notice appearing in the Leipzig Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung reviewing 3 string quartets "They are not without certain passages which appear agreable; on the whole, however, the ideas are mostly bizarre, either as the result of personal, involuntary humour, or because they are intentionally so devised......the composer would provide something excellent if he is extremely careful that his fire does not lead him to modulations and harshness, which makes his works incomprehensible, baroque and dark." - Sound familiar? - This review was not referring to Beethoven, but the Quartets Op.16 and 21 by Emanuel Alois Forster (1748-1823) who Beethoven had first met at the home of Prince Lichnowsky and affectionately referred to as his 'old master'. My reasons for bringing this topic up are that I wonder if anyone is familiar with any of Forster's 64 String quartets since they are known to have influenced Beethoven's own quartets?
