    Liszt Transcription of Beethoven 6th

    Hello you all,
    I haven't been posting for a long time, my apologies for that, I've been very busy. To celebrate and commererate *sp?* the good old times when Rod,Chris or Peter could/would supply us with mp3's on period instruments I thought it appropiate to offer the forum something aswell.

    Some time ago I bought myself the Katsaris set of Liszt transcriptions of beethoven symphonies. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous..I was so entranced with them<3...

    If you'd like to have another movement aswell I could supply one more I think..I don't know what would be the safest. Perhaps Peter/Chris/Rod or so could help me with that. Also I could upload other symphony movements.

    Hello Ruudp - nice to have you back with us. Well we have tried to revive an mp3 page here, but unfortunately with little interest. I think it best to offer them as you are here - we do of course have to be aware of legal issues, so perhaps samples from the works? I do have the Katsaris and they are very good.

      Yes, I think I will upload one more movement of the,..and then take another symphony. What did you think of the liberties Katsaris took with regards to liszt's transcriptions? For me they were very plausible and acceptable

        To be honest I thought they were the liberties Liszt took with the Beethoven symphonies! (I don't have a score of his arrangements) Actually I think Liszt's transcriptions are superb (the best there are) and Katsaris's performances extraordinarily virtuosic - I haven't listened for a while but you have inspired me to do so again!

        Update - I've just checked my Liszt/Beethoven transcription cds and found they are not all Katsaris! Also I'm missing the 8th symphony. I've listened to the 7th which is fine, though you miss the long sustaining chords in the slow introduction - I also thought the scherzo too plodding, but the finale exhilarating.

          Liszt's love of Beethoven is something for which we should be eternally grateful. When Liszt simply could not find a way of transcribing a particular phrase or chord or note, he carefully and humbly marked the offending anomaly in the margin and carried on. A bigger egotist would have made it all fit, at any cost.

            Thanks for that ruudp! I have never heard the Liszt transcriptions, so, it was very special. Especially to hear the Pastoral. Thanks.

              Preston, I have the symphonies of Beethoven transcribed to piano by Liszt (all except for the 8th symphony also like Peter. Strange, I wonder why the
              8th is difficult to find)? Anyway, do give a listen to more of them, they're fantastic and Liszt was the master in transcribing pieces.
