    Sublime Lully

    A treat for everyone !
a very short extract from a French film about the fantastic Lully with a short bit from the Te Deum.
Apologies for the unhappy ending, but it is based on fact that poor man put his cane through his foot whilst beating time, his toe later turned septic and gangerine set in and he later died. He refused to have his toe amputated.

This music is absolutely mind blowing in its beauty , exhiliration and majesty.

I would love to have seen the film but unfortunately I don't think it was on general release where we live . I could look for the DVD.

You may also enjoy the film about the castrato Farinelli - here's a beautiful clip showing Handel's Cara Sposa. The dvd is available on Amazon.

Yes the film dates from 1994. The singer in the clip (superimposed) was the French Countertenor Philippe Jaroussky. In the actual film they combined the voices of the tenor Derek Rogin and soprano Ewa Mallas to produce Farinelli's voice. Amazing to think that the last Castrato, Alessandro Moreschi died in 1922 - he actually made some early recordings in 1902 and 1904 and you can here him at http://www.usrf.org/news/010308-castrato_recording.html
