    Beethoven in China.

Searching Beethoven images I was surprised to discover this picture of a Beethoven statue in China! ...well not really surprised because I know, Western classical music has been welcomed there for quite some time.

What a market for record companies to pursue!

Very interesting. This statue in China looks like this Beethoven statue we have here in Vienna:

"God knows why it is that my pianoforte music always makes the worst impression on me, especially when it is played badly." -Beethoven 1804.

Hollywood, Yes, an uncanny resemblance. It appears to be identical, except much newer!

Surely there must have been be some media coverage of it's unveiling?

This Beethoven Monument here in Vienna is by the sculpter Kaspar von Zumbusch and dates from 1880. It stands in a little square in front of the Akademisches Gymnasium, one of the oldest and best humanistic schools in Vienna that was founded by the Jesuits in 1552. This is my favorite Beethoven statue that we have here.

Hollywood, yes it's a very fine memorial to Beethoven in Vienna.

on closer inspection the Chinese Beethoven statue has not so subtle differences.

Ahhhhhh the Jesuits! Those Christian Brothers are quite .......er.......famous here in Ireland

There is another monument in a big Chinese town, where my brother is now for work! The monument is near his hotel and of course I asked him to take many photographs! I'm sure nobody has seen it yet. If possible (I'm not keen on technology so I can't assure you) when he comes back with the photo I'll try to put it here.

I'm trying to send you 2 photos from the town of Qingdao, south-east of China. I hope you can see them, if not please Peter help me.
The monument is very beautiful. Anyway, i'd be better if China was less interested in western classical music and more in human rights...!

I find it difficult to listen to Beethoven's music and not be concerned about human rights.

Good point, Sorrano. The Nazis also embraced Beethoven as a symbol of the German Superman. Propaganda of the worst kind.
