Today on the classical radio station Pianist Alexei Volodin with the French National Orchestra and conductor Ingo Metzmacher perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 37, my favourite piano concerto.

      kol nidrei

sunset on friday night ushered the yom qipur observances for the jewish communities world wide.

just before that waning day the lament of KOL NIDREI is chanted three times in synagogues world wide.

the anonymously composed melody has been used in a lovely cello setting by Max Bruch, and plunked quite mysteriously into Ketelby's Sanctuary of the Heart.

it is also suggested that the melody forms the foundation for one of the movements in LVB's string quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor, Op. 131.

Here is a site that you may find interesting. It talks a little about his Opus 9 amongst other string pieces.

Debussy's amazing ballet Jeux which was premiered a few weeks before the Rite of Spring. Excellent version with Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

I just listened to the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, including No. 6 which he wrote from his Violin Concerto.

Since when has the piano arrangment of the violin concerto been designated as piano concerto number 6?? Beethoven arranged his 9th piano sonata (opus 14 number 1) as a string quartet. Has that been designated as Beethoven's 17th string quartet?? Was his arrangement of his 2nd symphony arranged as a piano trio designated as a numbered trio also??

I have seen the piano arrangement of the Violin Concerto (Opus 61a) being described as Piano Concerto Number 6 on quite a number of CDs. Not quite accurate but Horowitz17 was merely identifying the work for us. Not a big deal, surely?
