    Rostropovich

I'd just like to pay tribute to the great 'cellist who died yesterday aged 80 - not only a fine musician, but a brave man who stood up for his beliefs under the old Soviet regime offering support to dissidents such as Solzhenitsyn. I have a wonderful recording of him playing Schubert with Benjamin Britten as well as a sublime account of the Dvorak 'cello concerto.

I saw him in his first concert at the National Symphony Orchestra. He was amazing. When he became conductor, I saw him several times conducting and playing (cello) the Shostakovich cycle. I wish I'd seen them all.
