Beethoven and Handel

Doubtless had Beethoven taken up the offers to visit London, he would have made a pilgrimage to Brook St in London (Handel's home for many years) - Does anyone know when the long overdue project to open Handel's former home to the public as a museum is due to materialise ? The fact that it has taken so long is an absolute disgrace, and an insult to the musician Beethoven regarded as the greatest of all. Just imagine if Bonn or Vienna had treated Beethoven in the same way!

Thanks for that link Rod - I visited the site and found it very interesting. It is an absolute disgrace that they are still having to find funds - after the hundreds of millions that were wasted on the dome, the lottery commision grant this very important cultural project a paltry £500,000. I note you say 'even in England' - I would say 'especially in England'. Now I've got that off my chest, does anyone know Beethoven's variations on a theme from Handel's 'Judas Maccabaeus' for piano and 'cello ?

Yes, the theme is from 'Hail the conq'ring hero comes.' There are quite a few recordings of it on CD. For me, Handels masterwork is the oratario 'Theodora' - a rescue story not unlike Fidelio in many respects, only in this case the beloved couple die as martyrs!

By 'Hail', I of course really meant 'See'!
