    On This Day!

In 1736 Austrian composer and organist Johann Albrechtsberger is born near Vienna. Some of his students included Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Ignaz Moscheles, Josef Weigl (1766-1846) and Beethoven. Beethoven had arrived in Vienna in 1792 to study with Haydn. We all know that didn't go too well. Then Haydn recommended his friend Albrechtsberger, with whom Beethoven then studied harmony and counterpoint. On completition of his studies, the young student noted, "Patience, diligence, persistence, and sincerity will lead to success," which reflects upon Albrechtsberger's own compositional philosophies.

Also of note in 1809 Composer Felix Mendelssohn is born in Hamburg.

Although Beethoven thought highly of Albrechtsberger, the feelings were not mutual - Beethoven was far too radical for the conservative Albrechtsberger.
