    Lots of birthdays,

    In 1719 the birth of Leopold Mozart, German-Austrian composer and father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in Augsburg.
    In 1778 birth of Johann Nepomuk Hummel who was an Austrian pianist and composer whose reputation rivaled Beethoven's during his lifetime, is born in what is now Bratislava.
    In 1805 birth of German composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel who was the sister of Felix Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, and
    In 1900 the birth of American composer, conductor and lecturer Aaron Copland.

      who told her, my dear Fanny, it is not appropriate for a woman to be a composer; you must shed your light on the domestic scene, raise children and please your husband, etc. etc. Thus frustrating poor Fanny, who wrote only a few things before following his advice, and perhaps losing the world a great composer!! This sin is partially expunged by Felix's role in the Bach revival.

            Bit of a reactionary environment as far as women's roles here on the LVB forum, eh?... I for one hope things have changed enough so that future Fannies will produce music, not only children.
