Well, it looks like piano arrangements and transcriptions can be found in the recording world: I just found a Balakirev CD with his own piano transcriptions of Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 130 (the Cavatina) and the No. 8 Op. 59 (Allegretto movement). I don't know how effective these will be, but at least it's something.
