    Tony Palmer

There are two Palmer films that I would somehow like to get hold of - one is England, my England (about Purcell) and the other is his film about Puccini. If anyone has any information about these seemingly unavailable films, particularly the Purcell I would be grateful!

Well, Peter, the Puccini film is available on Amazon. The Purcell film may be somewhat harder to find as they say it's unavailable at his time. Here's what they say on Amazon

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/England-My-St ory-Henry-Purcell/dp/B00004CTEZ/sr=1-4/qid=1158695642/ref=sr_1_4/202-6088875-5595014?ie=UTF8&s=video

In the meantime, they do have a synopsis on the film and movie there that you can read.

      Good luck!

Thanks but unfortunately it isn't PAL format. As for the Purcell has anyone seen it or do they have a copy available? It is impossible to find.

I've seen this Palmer film & was really disappointed. It has a sort of Russellesque quality of cheap psychodrama that just wears thin long before the movie ends. Unfortunately, that quality has infected a lot of movies on composers, including the mostly estimable Mike Leigh film "Topsy-Turvy." (Leigh at least understands actors more than Russell ever did.)

Thanks for that review DavidO - I'll drop that one from my wish list, but the Purcell is supposed to be worthwhile.

If you can ever find it. For some reason it's terrible difficult to find and is unavailable in most places.
