    The musical island

Anyone heard of Alexander island in the Antarctic?

Here is a link to the map showing places named after composers. Beethoven has two penisulas, one named Eroica!

And of course the Emperor penguins are named after a certain concerto!

Would you believe I have just read two books about Scott, Shackleton & Co. and I never realised there was an area of Antarctica named after all these composers. It's true what Joy said: You can't get away from Beethoven!

hehe na you can't. But I wouldn't have thought there are islands in Antarctica named after composers..

There is of course 'Alexander's Feast', HWV 75 "Ode for St Cecilia's Day" by a certain Mr Handel (1736). Don't know if St Ceclia's Day has relevance in polar exploration there, perhaps (?).

I can't find a place called this anywhere on Earth. But I did see here in the UK a train called Handel once, a pathetic little shunter. What an insult, they should have reserved that for Berlioz!

You're right Rod. Handel is larger than life in many ways. He, Handel seems to have written not one but two works with the name of Alexander in them. 'Alexander's Feast' and also the oratorio 'Alexander Balus' (1748). Whether this solves the puzzle of our musical island remains to be seen.

p.s. Wikipedia surely has the right answer. It says -'' Alexander Island was discovered on January 28, 1821 by a Russian expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, who named it Alexander I Land for the reigning Tsar Alexander I of Russia. ''

So true! (But then who would want too)?

After looking at the map I have this to say, What? No Mozart? (Unless I missed something).

Don't worry, Joy. In the country of Zart (very near Poland), there is a water feature surrounding a castle named after Wolfgang.

Michael, I am aware of your waspish sense of humour, but I'm not sure what you mean by this?
