    Beethoven at the Proms

A bonus at the BBC proms last night (due to Soprano Dawn Upshaw being unwell) was Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra performing the 3rd Piano Concerto with Llyr Williams as soloist. Excellent performance, especially the second movement. He is currently on tour with them. Perhaps a recording of the piece will come later.

The 5th and 9th symphonies are up on 4th and 3rd September and will be on BBC 4 TV.

It'll make a change from all the Russian rubbish we've been offered so far. I thought the couple of Mozart violin concertos I saw were quite nice in places. I prefer M's violin to his piano.

Agreed, I know it’s the anniversaries of Mozart and Shostakovich, but Beethoven has only three schedule works this prom season!!

      Shame on them!

I've mentioned before on this forum that i'm very much taken with the Vansk/Minnesota performances of the Beethoven symphonies. They're lively, well-tempo'd, with a lot of fire and passion.

I agree too and the 9th should be great! Very exciting and lively as you say. Looking forward to that too!

The Proms are a mockery in any case, I've lived in London 20 years and have never been to a single Prom.
