    On This Day!

In 1855 -- Franz Liszt (1811-1886) gives the first performance of his Piano Concerto No. 1. Composed in 1849, in this massive work the theme is made to do multiple duties. It may be altered to turn up as a second subject it may later serve as the subject for a finale but the theme remains reccognizable throughout. Liszt was very inventive in this way.

Yes amazing piece, but for me his finest work for piano and orchestra is without doubt the Totentanz - quite dazzling.
