    Schubert's Ave Maria

I was at a concert last night where the chorus sang Schubert's Ave Maria. Beautiful and splendid indeed! But where did this piece first originate? I'm familiar with Bach's/Gounod's arrangement. The Schubert sounded like the one we are most familiar with. There have probably been many arrangments of this piece and some I have heard do not sound like the Schubert's popular arrangement at all. Anyone with information on the Ave Maria arrangments?
    Thanks!

Stick to Schubert's original, far better than any of the gushy oversentimental romanticised slush!
Ave Maria is the third of Schubert's wonderful settings of Ellen's songs from Walter Scott's 'Lady of the Lake'.
