You HAVE been busy! I imagine you are glad to be done. Tell us, please, what it's about.

You are correct: Martin Bauer is our fictionalized heroien's boyfriend, an engineer at the Polytechnic Institute who designs bridges. For Beethoven he is 'one of our new men of sttel... a slide rule without a soul'.

The new novel for those of you kind enough to ask:

The book is called: 'Singer in the land of night'.

May 1941. A wealthy New York jeweler and friend of FDR goes to J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI, because his 22-year-old daughter is missing. She has disappeared into occupied France with her fiance and with her father's yearly consignment of uncut diamonds. Hoover sends Arthur Singer, a rookie FBI agent, to Paris to look for them. Why did they disappear, why did they take the diamonds, why was he singled out for this assignment? These are some of the questions the young FBI agent has to answer during his investigation in Nazi-occupied France.

WOW! What a great title! Sounds very involved and intriguing, with a lot of research involved, I expect. How do you come up with your ideas?

Thank you for clearing this up for me so quickly. "...a slide rule without a soul." He sounds a bit chilling/sinister.

I am really eager to see this one - so many intricate dimensions.

            Hello everyone,

I am another newbie to this forum. I have to admit that my interest lies not with Beethoven himself (sorry, sorry, sorry!) but with the film. My father-in-law, Ralph Riach is cast as Schlemmer - we had a postcard from Budapest just last week.

I've gone right through this thread from the very beginning, and learned so much about both the man (Beethoven that is, not Ralph), and the film. And the process too - I'm amazed that the scriptwriter has allowed the forum to become so involved - testament to your infinite knowledge of Beethoven (especially Peter!).
Quite an honour for you all.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the film - with Ed Harris in the lead, I'm sure it'll be amazing.

It is delightful to hear from you! I have been watching the dailies, and I can tell you that your father-in-law is absolutely wonderful as Schlemmer - funny, pathetic, moving, just the touch of comic relief and hapless humanity that we intended when we wrote the character. I am looking forward to the pelasure of meeting him one day. Meanwhile, tell him 'thank you' for me for doing such a splendid job.

I have just seen the dailies for the premiere of the Ninth Symphony. I sent the following email to the director, Agnieszka Holland:

Your Ninth Symphony is magnificent - a masterpiece. Diane especially is wonderful. My love and thanks to you all.

                That says everything, I think.

Thanks for asking. Things are going very well. I have seen all the dailies from the premiere of the Ninth and they are exquisite. We have about ten days of shooting left, then on to postproduction. We are still on time and on budget, so Agnieszka is doing a masterful job. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds like the film went very smoothly which can't probably be said about a lot of films.
