    Elgar piano concerto

Last night the BBC premiered a realisation by Robert Walker of the sketches Elgar made for a piano concerto. It is a remarkable achievement sounding thoroughly Elgarian - Robert Walker has done a great job, my only previous experience of his work being when I was in a youth orchestra he was our composer in residence (accompanying us on tour to Portugal) and we premiered his piece called 'At Bignor Hill'.

To read more about the realisation of the Elgar concerto http://www.elgar.org/3piancoa.htm

or to purchase the cd http://www.elgarfoundation.org/troll...8/68/index.htm

    Hello Peter,

Do you know the history of the sketches? Before or after his wife passed, etc?

One of my favorite CD's is Anthony Payne's realization of Elgar's 3rd symphony sketches.

Elgar was toying with this concerto for around 20 years and some of the ideas were played to his wife. There exists a recording of Elgar improvising at the piano and one of these is actually part of the 2nd movement. Interestingly, Walker actually lived in Elgar's Sussex cottage "Brinkwells" (not far from me) for 15 years.
