Which chord is Bach outlining with the first bass note in measure 4?
Is this a G# diminished, or a B minor?
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. -- Act V, Scene V, Macbeth.
If we're talking about the same prelude no.5 in D Book 1, I think the harmony is E dominant 7th (3rd inversion) modulating to A major in the 2nd half of the bar.
It seems like he has outlined a different chord for almost every beat. After the first measure he just goes mad!
Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. -- Act V, Scene V, Macbeth.
