    First complete cycle recomendation.

    Hi!
    I'm trying to suggest a good symphonies cycle to a friend (the same from the topic no one read) and he wants one that has blood dropping.

    I can't make my mind as to suggest the:
    - Zinman
    - Toscanini
    - Furtwängler
    - Karajan (63)
    - what else? (lots of others, but it needs to be savagge).

    Help please?

    The Toscanini recordings, as noted by many others, are undoubtedly the best interpretations.

    Just listen to the cellos going at it in the 3rd movement of the 5th.

    Just hear the brass going nuts in the last movement of the 7th.

    And finally try to run for cover as tenor Jan Peerce explodes on his entry into the 4th movement of the 9th.

    That'll keep your friend happy... if he can overcome the lousy recording qualities of the original sound masters.

      Well if you want a lively dynamic performance why not go for HIP? The Norrington London Classical player set is excellent value at around £9.00 on Amazon and you can judge from the excellent rendition of the 8th on the authentic page of this site. Of course like all sets it isn't consistent but the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th are great.

        I have to agree. The Norrington is wonderful! I particularly enjoy the 5th and the 8th! Lots of great tempo and movement!

          We went to two stores and he is almost going for the WPO-Bernstein set (which is double the price for the norrington on the other store).
          If he doesn't buy the norrington, I will.

            The recordings on EMI by Sir Charles Mackerras RLPO are totally wonderfull, with refreshing tempi and above all such musical phrasing, which the Norrington set completely lacks, being wooden and lifeless.

              The Zinman set is not much more expensive than the Norrington and equally savage but to my ears more art than brute! I'd definitely go for it and have given it to several friends. Now if only maestro Kleiber had completed a set there wouldn't be a debate to be had......
