Here's the story: "An unknown composition by Johann Sebastian Bach has been discovered by a classical music scholar in Germany. Michael Maul, a researcher for the Leipzig Bach Archive, found the score two weeks ago amongst documents from the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar.

There was no previous record of the piece, a two-page handwritten aria dated October 1713. According to the archive, the composer wrote the work for soprano, strings and basso continuo in honor of the 52nd birthday of Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar, whom Bach served as court organist." By the way, it nearly escaped a fire. It was amongst documents taken for restoration found in a crate which was in the room consumed by fire in the German library. It's the first 'new' music to surface from the composer in three decades. The last previously unknown vocal work to surface was in 1935.
On NPR radio tonight they will play some excerpts and discuss this 'new' find!

Part of the aria can be listened to at the following page.

A very nice composition, but of course there is not much Bach that isn't. This one, as noted in the accompanying story, is somewhat unusual for Bach in that it is a melody against a fairly simple accompaniment, without Bach's usual polyphonic weavings.

I composed some variations on a theme of yours... funny little tune, but it yielded some good things.
