Yes this is a terrific piece - written in 1822 for the opening of the Joephstadt theatre Vienna. Today only the overture is well known, but there are 10 pieces in all, much of the music being a revision of the music for the Ruins of Athens. In fact only the overture and the 5th piece were entirely new. Beethoven had originally intended to write two overtures as a tribute to Bach and Handel - in the event only this majestic and exhilerating 'Handelian' overture was written.

The most intriguing aspect of this work is the opus number... 124... which sandwiches it right between the Missa Solemnis at OP 123 and the famous 9th at OP 125.

As for the Handelian aspect... it's almost impossible to hum the opening bars without getting into the opening bars of the Royal Fireworks. ... an amazing tribute from a composer who stated, on the receipt of a copy of Handel's works, that he had learned so much from that composer's music.

The overture is a great tribute to Handel. For the main theme, Beethoven uses a theme from Handel's "Alexander's Feast."
