    Naxos: Best of series

Having listened to the popular classics over the years I have begun to listen to the Naxos: Best of series on Naxos Radio ( http://www.naxosradio.com ). I have just signed up to the radio station for 12 months, as well as the main Naxos website to hear tracks from over 5,000 CDs. This is an excellent service on the internet and I fully intend to add to my forever growing collection of classical CDs by purchasing music in the Naxos series.

My question to the group is, "how do you rate the Naxos series?"

So I can become more familiar with the various composers, I have decided to collect the Naxos: Best of series. This includes well known composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Bizet etc), as well as the less known (Telemann, Glazunoz, Lutoslawski etc). So far to date my favourite CDs are Grieg, Mendelssohn and Weber.

I'd be interested to hear your views, comments and suggestions on the Naxos series of CDs.

    Regards,
    Robin

Naxos is not such a good deal these days as it used to be, certainly here in UK. There are other labels that offer even better value and better performances for your money if you shop around.

      Thanks for your comment Rod!

I have bought many CDs on the Naxos label over the years and found them to be excellent value for money and have some excellent performances on each CD, although many compositions are performed by many European musicians.

Their CD covers are colourful and easy to read. As well as the composers and compositions, what inspires me to buy a CD is the colourful, bright and clear packaging.

I do have many other great CDs in my collection, but the Naxos label stands out most for me.

      Regards,
      Robin

I agree Robin, I think Naxos have done an excellent job at introducing budget classical cds to a wider audience. An interesting series they run is the great pianists - some of the best quality remasterings of old recordings I've heard.

Well for example here in London you can get just about the complete set of anything (symphonies, sonatas etc) cheaper on other labels than Naxos. All of the period instrument sets of the symphonies I have, other than Gardiners, were bought cheaper than buying the Naxos versions. The authentic cello sonatas on Apex are light years ahead of Naxos recently released (modern instrument) equivalent at the same price.

On the other hand, apparently Naxos Fidelio is as good as you can get. I have Handel's Saul on Naxos which is still better than McCreesh's new and much more expensive version on Archiv.
