Haven't listened to all the other pieces yet.

Nice present Amalie - aren't those songs just amazingly beautiful, the dying swansong of romanticism.

Yes, they are the swansong of romanticism, very late products of the romantic spirit. I often think, exquisite though they are, there is something slightly decadent about them, as though they really belong at the end of the 19th century perhaps.

Beethoven music for the stage is on tap this evening starting with what else but King Stephen Op.117 then onto Egmont Op.84 and finally The Ruins of Athens Op.113. Beethoven once again squeezing all he can out of the human voice.

Complete Beethoven Overtures - Zinman and the Tonhalle, Zurich - molto furioso as always and splendid - Egmont is particularly fine. Also Samuel Barber Knoxville: summer of 1915 etc on Naxos with Marin Alsop and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, soloists Karina Gauvin. Completely ravishing and atmospheric - just wish I had the heat and a mint julep or a Pimms to go with it instead of the lingering frost of an English April.....

Mauro Giuliani 1781-1829,a two disc set of his three Concertos for Guitar and Orchestra and four sets of variations for solo guitar.
Very pleasant guitar music coming from the peak of theme and variation form which was so popular at that time.

I've been listening to Penderecki, some of the orchestral and chamber works. (The Sinfonietta for Strings, Viola Concerto, Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, and the Quartet for Clarient and Strings.) Good listening!
