Another great selection ,this downloaded so much faster than on my old computer and sounded wonderful.

If horns with valves were invented in 1817,just how long would it take for the newfangled instruments to become popular with players?

Still not a fan of those period horns though.

I already have that CD, and I think it is excellent. Love the sound of period horns. If a good player is playing. Hasselmann is very good, and Koster (1st horn) is one of the great hornists of our time. He just rocks in Haydn, too. Thanks, Rod.

To be honest the performances on this CD as a whole are pretty average, I've heard better. The horns should have been blaring more like I've heard even on modern instrument recordings. I HATE muted horns.

Wouldn't they have overpowered the clarinets and bassoons without muting in this piece?

Trouble is all to often they are muted when they should be shouting, and this goes for Beethoven music in general where the horn is involved. I have heard other recordings where the horns are really 'letting rip' in these wind pieces - the performances in the mp3 CD are rather tame by comparison.

Really enjoyed this piece as well particularly the fourth movement. As a matter of fact, I heard this piece performed not long ago via radio. Always a pleasure to hear. Good recording too.
